The most important gift that God gave to living human beings is the gift of free will. No living person or spiritual being can accomplish ANYTHING unless he, she or it makes a conscious decision to do it. It is the law of free will that forms the nexus between those of us who occupy physical bodies and those living in the world of spirit.
Free will connects the world of matter with the world of spirit because it not only applies to both worlds, but it is the single most important attribute pertaining to the material and spiritual well-being of all souls, living or in Spirit. In a free society, the vast majority of a person’s material and emotional well-being depends upon the decisions that he or she makes throughout his or her life. In Spirit, the level of evolution, and thus the level of happiness of the spirit depends upon the decisions it makes about the path it wishes to follow.
As I said in chapter 2, the material world is a little like an enclosed kindergarten with lots of kids and four secure walls. It is within our material boundaries that newly hatched souls are able to learn how their own behavior affects the other kids. It is here that we learn the real meaning of free will. In the words of one of the spirits that Dr Wickland (see next chapter) freed from its earthbound status, “This world is only a school where we gain understanding through experience.” It is here that we experience the rough and tumble consequences of cause and effect, as well as the results of the spiritual impulses we choose to follow.
