Demons are assumed to exist on the lowest spiritual planes (Hell) in a sort of upside-down kingdom that is an evil and “dark mirror” reflection of heaven. Lucifer (Satan, the Devil) is at the top (bottom). His demonic angels serve “under” him, and armies of lesser demons serve in an upside-down pyramid beneath them. Although the pyramid is inverted, the following descriptions treat it as right-side-up for simplicity. Lucifer himself, is called Satan, “The Devil” or the Antichrist.
All of Lucifer’s angels have retained their original heavenly ranks in spite of their demotion to the underworld. The upper ranks are referred to as devils. They represent a sort of executive officer corps serving directly under Satan. They tend to be more “refined” and intelligent than the lower ranks, a bit like princelings or the children of nobility. The lower ranks are referred to simply as demons. They became what can be compared to a modern army’s enlisted corps with non-commissioned officers and lower ranked foot soldiers. The demons are not as intelligent as the devils and certainly not in any way “refined”. Almost all of the demonic activity we see in the material world is done by the ranks of demons while the devils usually remain out of sight while commanding the demons.
The demons themselves are extremely profane, vulgar, and thoroughly evil. They are organized in a military hierarchy, each demon serving under a superior demon. While they don’t have much free will of their own, their orders filter down from Satan and his princeling devils on high and they carry out their orders with sadistic relish. They call their domain “The Kingdom”.
Everything in the Kingdom is backwards, as is befitting a reflection in a dark mirror. Right is left, up is down, light is dark and good is evil. These entities approach from the rear. They circle counterclockwise. They write backwards. For them the ultimate good is evil. They have no positive nature. They work in opposition to the principles of the positive spiritual world.
Demons and devils all exhibit a deep hatred for God, as well as all religious symbolism. While God’s angels are altruistic, the demons and devils are narcissistic. They invert crosses on walls and tear up bibles. They write blasphemous things about God on walls, and backwards on mirrors. Their overtly anti-religious behavior gives credence to the Christian belief that the devils and demons were once good angels whose narcissism led to their excommunication from heaven by God Himself.
In the Western world, their first activity during a haunting generally occurs at exactly 3:00 AM because Jesus is said to have died at 3:00 PM, and 3:00 Am is the “opposite” of 3:00 PM. 3:00 AM is the demon’s high noon. Their activities tend to come in threes in order to mock the trinity. In other parts of the world, they mock religious beliefs in other ways because they profane whatever is holy in the native culture.
Devils and demons are not all-powerful. They live in darkness because they cannot create their own energy as does God. All their energy has either to filter down from above or be “captured” from the never-ending supply of evil human sources. They must obey certain rules set forth by God after their surrender.
Though their basic instinct is to destroy every work of God, they are forbidden from entering any level of the spiritual realm higher than the Hellish ones they occupy. They are forbidden from entering the world of the living without the permission of someone alive. God created the entire spiritual world. That includes the hells as well as the heavens, and He created the laws that keep them separate. Demons and devils fear God and His angels because the positive forces of heaven are infinitely more powerful than the dark forces of Hell, and God will punish them for any transgression.
