If reincarnation happens at all, I believe just as Frederick Myers did that it happens no more than a few times for specific reasons, and doing so is a choice made by souls in order to correct an errant spiritual trajectory or to finish some project that they failed to finish in their last incarnation.
As we learned in chapter 2, the ego…the personality… is the part of ourselves that stands as the link between our minds, our bodies and the external material world. The world of matter is only a crutch, like temporary training wheels on a child’s bicycle. It is a world of limitation created to allow us to learn spiritual lessons in a simplified three dimensional world. The evidence suggests that when we die, we remove the training wheels and leave the world of matter behind. As we slowly progress through the planes of illusion and into the more ethereal realms beyond, the need for our bodies, along with the rest of the material world, recedes further and further behind us until we no longer have any need for the illusion of matter. As this happens, the now greatly enlarged soul enters the higher planes where there’s nothing that resembles a material structure at all. Thus, the external ego dissolves simply because it no longer has a function.
But the personality we had while living remains very alive deep within the soul itself. Even in the highest spiritual plane, it constantly affects the decisions your soul makes acting like an internal guardian angel.
Do you remember when you were four years old? Are you still the same person you were then? The obvious answer is no, but in fact, that four year old child still lives within you. He or she affects you every day without you ever knowing it. It’s the same in Spirit. With or without reincarnation, the four year old child will remain forever a permanent piece of your soul. With or without reincarnation, the old personality is simply incorporated into the soul just as it would be if the soul never reincarnated at all. No matter how buried it becomes, it will always be a part of you. No one ever really dies!
